Consumer Complaint Documents Checklist in India

A consumer complaint is easier to assess when the purchase, promise, problem and prior request for a solution are all documented. Organise the evidence before repeating the same complaint through several channels.

Prove the purchase and the promise

Keep the invoice, order confirmation, warranty, policy, advertisement, product listing, quotation and payment record. Save the version that applied when you bought the goods or service.

Record the problem and the resulting loss

Preserve photographs, videos, inspection or service reports, delivery records, error messages and a dated account of what happened. Keep the original file where possible and do not alter screenshots or documents.

Keep the complaint trail

Save emails, chats, call reference numbers, complaint tickets, replies and any offer of repair, replacement or refund. A concise chronology makes it easier to identify what has already been requested and what response was given.

Use the channel that fits the issue

The National Consumer Helpline is a pre-litigation grievance channel. A lawyer can assess whether further action, a consumer commission proceeding or another route fits the facts, relief sought and applicable limitation period.

Key takeaways

  • Keep proof of purchase
  • Preserve the original problem evidence
